It’s a big debate these days…to build a traditional website or to use a blog to accomplish your organization’s web goals. There are certainly pros and cons of each method. And naturally, different tactics work differently for different types of business and organizations when it comes to achieving website goals. Not all websites are the same—nor should they be! Let’s take a look at a few important questions when it comes to creating a post-based blog vs. building a more traditional static or page-based website. Where does a blog-based website excel? Because the basic format of a blog-based website is a chronological list of posts, usually ordered from newest to oldest, websites powered by blogging software are great for those that intend to publish time-sensitive information on a frequent basis, keeping the latest content at the center of attention while gracefully archiving the older content. News sites and opinion-oriented sites are a natural fit, but there are other circumstances where a steady stream of fresh content is an ideal objective. As another bonus, search engines tend to like the freshness that a blog provides. What are the drawbacks to a blog-based site? Unless the site revolves around a constant stream [...]

Don’t be a victim. No matter how tempting it may sound when the false promises are laid out on the table by an SEO scammer, the truth remains the same—SEO con artists are par for the course out there…and they’re downright excellent at getting website owners to fall for their baseless, yet hope inspiring deceptions. The first thing you can do to protect yourself from SEO scammers—and to separate the good guys from the bad—is to understand the tactics that the scammers like to use. Here are 5 things you’ll learn from an SEO scammer (all false, of course): One – We’ll Get You The Number One Positioned Listing On Google. Sounds great. If only it was actually this easy! Without going into every last detail of why legit SEO providers simply never promise specific number one Google rankings, it’s important to know that number one is in most cases unrealistic (and impossible to guarantee). Two – Your Existing Site Is Terrible When It Comes To SEO. All the scammers like to promote this notion—and of course, they’ll be happy to help you “fix” the problem too. Thing is, I’ve seen this used by SEO scammers when sites actually are [...]

Blogs like WordPress, by their very nature, are not usually optimized for the best possible search engine friendliness. It’s true – because blogs tend to be set up with a chronological content organization system, the posts become dated very quickly. Search engines and readers eventually disregard the non-recent material. However, there are a few tricks to tweaking a WordPress blog so it behaves more like a traditional web site for search. One – Choose The Best Category For A Post By selecting just one category for each post or page published on your WordPress powered blog, the chances will be greatly reduced that the same content shows up in multiple pages to the search engines. Having duplicate content is a huge no-no when it comes to optimization. Another effect of only using one individual category for each post is that doing this will create more tightly focused category pages that can help search engines better understand your blog too. Two – Upgrade The Stock Template Meta Data By default, many WordPress templates fill in the meta data for a page (such as the page’s encoded description) with distracting or irrelevant details. We all know that meta data is [...]

Had I not moved to dedicated servers and kept the site records, traffic and page view numbers would be even higher still. My sites are true niche websites that drive search traffic every month to the tune of tens and tens of thousands of search terms. All this without one DMOZ listing – who needs DMOZ anyway, not you, not me! By the way, never, ever, piss off a senior DMOZ.org editor..lol I have kept quite while turning down interviews because I like my privacy, and hate self-promotion. I came up with RandFish before he was Rand Fishkin of SEOMoz fame (Yeah, nothing like a little name dropping….). Rand and I were both in the top 5 in reputation in a very large and popular forum before we both left. The fact is, I have a high school education, so clearly I am not the most well spoken individual.
Recently we’ve updated our wordpress code to keep pace with some of the many new features and to ensure the integrity of our seo blog site. One of the great things about WordPress is the fact that developers from around the globe participate in expanding its features and functionality via widgets and plugins. With that benefit, comes cost. As the WordPress blog is also the target of unsavory characters who have nothing better to do but look for holes in the security of the WordPress code. This leads to updates that are security driven, rather than updates that are quality or usability driven. Regardless, this week I have noted our RSS feed is not working and the reason for this post. Simply to let you know we are aware and will be working to address the matter. I realized this after our most recent update when testing to make sure everything worked – which it doesn’t. My back end is a bloody mess to say the least. In doing some research on the issue over the weekend to see if there was a quick fix, I went over to the wordpress support forum and did a search for “rss feed [...]

Sure, the payoff can be gigantic, but blogging is a ton of work – there’s just no denying that. Are you up to the challenge? Let’s Start With The Payoffs Of Blogging. Blogging can be a major booster of both website traffic and devoted fans of your site. Basically, professional bloggers know that blogging is about building a relationship with the visitor instead of just throwing out a bunch of easy-to-skip details or information. When implemented correctly, having a blog can be huge help towards the optimization of a site. That’s the good news about blogging. Blogging Looks Easy, But… Few realize the layers of work that it actually requires. Actually writing blog posts is just the tip of the iceberg. The extensive planning is probably the most time-consuming and mentally demanding part of blogging – after awhile, coming up with new and interesting ideas to write about can become a real burden. And then there’s that ever famous writer’s block that comes into contention. Even prolific professional authors and bloggers know how real writers block is – it is inevitably impossible to avoid. The thing about professional writers is that through experience with the issue, they have [...]

To blog, or not to blog? These days, that’s the million dollar question when it comes to business websites. It’s not always easy to make the choice, especially since the formerly distinct line between what defines a blog and what defines a traditional website is becoming increasingly blurred. Should your business’s website include a blog? Your business’s website should include a blog if it will be utilized. There are several great ways to take advantage of business blogging for those so inclined. However, the key is whether or not the motivation is there to succeed with the blog. What should a business blog about? Business blogging can cover a huge variety of topics – finding something to blog about is almost never the challenge. Businesses, small and large, find that blogging is a great tool to communicate with their customers, clients, and even employees in a personal, practical way. A few areas for businesses to cover via their blogs might include: Company news, updates, and promotions Answering frequently asked questions Teaching customers about the products or services offered How much commitment does business blogging require? One of the first rules of business blogging is that timely and [...]

Blogging has become an incredibly popular way for both businesses and individuals to communicate, share their latest and greatest of just about everything, and ultimately to reach an audience of unthinkable proportions. Yes… blogging is great, but is it the perfect SEO solution? When Used Effectively, Blogging Does Complement A Good SEO Plan. Blogs serve a noble purpose when it comes to enhancing a site’s SEO blueprint. Even for superficial reasons, people do like to read blogs – they’re just appealing. And ultimately, what’s good for your visitors is almost always good for increasing your site’s ranking. Here are a few ways blogging complements a solid SEO plan: Bloggers love to link. Being a respective and active part of the overall blogosphere promotes a sense of community that can end up delivering lots of link love and other positive exposure for your site. Blogging can be an encouraging way to reach out to your site’s visitors and say something that might otherwise go unsaid. Carrying on this type of dialog with regular visitors and customers can be used to build trust. Frequent, regular blog posting can help when it comes to avoiding the stale content dilemma. Search engines (and [...]

Modern blogging platforms sure do make getting content live and published on the web a rapid, easy process. The thing is, without a conscious SEO strategy and blog focus, it’s just as easy to blog yourself in circles while only attracting a sparse handful of visitors. With that caveat out of the way, and by building a blog with SEO in mind, the blogging can and will work. Here’s just how to do it: 1. Start With The Right Blog Template Blogging themes and templates are not created equal when it comes to SEO. In fact, most of them completely ignore the aspect of SEO altogether, focusing instead on pure aesthetics and design creativity. This is fine for the casual or personal blogger, but for those wishing to step it up a notch and get serious about blogging, having a template that is set up to support basic white-hat SEO is a must. 2. Develop A Consistent Overall Presence Instead of just blogging about anything and everything, professional bloggers know that there still must be a topic or niche – just like any optimized website. Stick with the narrowest focus possible and develop sub categories from there. By being super [...]
