TMI (too much information). Who would ever think that too much TMI is a bad thing for those aiming to drive lead generation from their websites? Well, I know it goes against common sense on many levels, but when you step back and look at it, giving your visitors Too Much Information is something that goes hand in hand with a plummeting conversion rate. Let’s examine the situation for a couple of minutes… What happens when a visitor lands on your site looking for information? Well first of all, let’s reiterate that fact alone — visitors are always looking for something when they find your site, and more often than not, that something is information. So, your visitor does a search engine search with a quest for information and your site is well optimized enough to be the recipient of that search’s visitor traffic. Next, the visitor immediately finds the answer to their question, thanks to your excellently informative website. Visitor is happy they found their information, and now satisfied, they click away. Your lead generation opportunity has just been missed. How could you have possibly avoided this missed opportunity, while still keeping your visitors happy and informed? First of [...]

Landing pages are not a new concept by any means. In fact, in one way or another, they’ve been a part of the landscape of the web going back to the early days of the search engines and web directories (amazing that’s it’s been about 15 years ago already, isn’t it?). Anyway, because there are a lot of misconceptions and general confusion out there about what landing pages are and how they work, we’re going to share a little bit of background here. What A Landing Page Is NOT We need to clear the air before going any further when it comes to explaining what a landing page is not. A landing page is not the same thing as a "Doorway Page." Doorway pages were all the thing for awhile in the world of Black Hat Search Engine Optimization — they used hidden keywords and tricky tactics to inaccurately attract visitors to certain sites through the search engine results. Enough about that though… Just remember, even though they have similar names, Landing Pages are good and Doorway Pages are bad. This is necessary to clear up first, because so many folks get these two really different concepts mixed up. So, [...]

Now here’s something that we all already have some experience with (and it’s based on common sense); something that we all understand well, but usually forget or choose not to do anything about. That is, choosing our words wisely on the web. A Single Word With Drastic Consequences You know, changing a single work on a landing page, or in an online ad for example, can have drastic consequences. For the better or for the worse, depending on the particular circumstances. And this is exactly why most online marketing gurus and successful web businesses follow a never ending pattern of test, measure, and tweak. The smallest things can make the biggest difference! Ready For A Very Fictional Example? Great, let’s get started then. For our example, we’ll look at a typical little word that can make or break a PPC (Pay-Per-Click) ad campaign. Say you’ve just done a Google Search for "Astronaut Pen." You’ve just watched the classic episode of Seinfeld and thought you’d like to buy one of these pens as a gag gift for a fellow Seinfeld fan. Now the organic results (the bigger listings down the left hand side of the search page that aren’t highlighted), well, [...]

Search engine marketing is a wide, wide world, and it’s easy to get lost in all of the information and advice out there. You can’t try all of it at once, so how do you put together a solid marketing plan that will get the job done without being overwhelming? It’s actually not rocket science. All you need to do is take a step back and focus on the critical essentials for your marketing plan. Begin With The End In Mind Be clear about your goals. At the end of the day, what are you trying to accomplish? Do you want to increase the amount of traffic to your site? Are you looking to increase conversions on a specific product offering? Do you just want greater brand recognition? I see too many search engine marketing plans fail because they don’t start with clear objectives. You can waste a lot of your personal time and resources doing the wrong thing, or even just trying to do everything. Focus on what you want to do and then plot the shortest path to get it done. This will help you stay on task with your plan, and keep you from being tempted to [...]

Finding a few extra little ways to step out and connect with potential customers (and existing ones too) shouldn’t have to be all that difficult or expensive. You’re probably already doing the big things—like maintaining a top-notch website and working with the pros (like us) for optimization. Here are 6 extra tips to get the most out of your existing efforts. One – Develop each web page with a keyword in mind. Visitors search by using keywords; search engines organize and rank websites according to their keywords. Keywords really are the key attracting search visitors. Strategy: Don’t overdo it—make sure each web page is created to encompass a specific keyword phrase, but use that phrase wisely and sparingly. Two – Remember the images. And be sure they’re optimally “marked-up” too. Image searches are remarkably popular and will often bring visitors to your site when a normal keyword search does not. Strategy: Use images that describe a page’s written content and be sure that the image file name and Meta description are also contextually related to the content. Three – Never underestimate the power of a good mailing list. Even with RSS subscriptions, good old fashioned email newsletters have a way [...]

Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising is an incredibly popular way of attracting visitors to websites and blogs. But all too often, people assume that SEO (search engine optimization) and PPC should not be used together… when in fact, they can work really well together. Wait, What Exactly Is PPC Anyway? Well first, for those not familiar with how PPC works, let’s take a really quick look. In a nutshell, it’s basically when you buy advertising that’s targeted to a certain search term that you specify. When a potential visitor searches for that term, your ad listing will appear alongside the search engine’s regular results or context-appropriate material on other network affiliated sites. You only pay a pre-specified amount if a visitor actually clicks on your ad to visit your site. Isn’t The Goal Of SEO To Eliminate The Need For PPC? Well, the answer is yes, and no. Good expert SEO can and does frequently provide all of the desired traffic to a website. But there are still times when having a well-optimized PPC campaign can seriously help traffic and sales in a big way: Getting Started – Even the best SEO doesn’t become effective immediately. Building a [...]

I want to start this post by saying I am very pleased with the direction our small firm has been moving this year. Profitability is up with 2008 Revenues on pace to grow 100% above fiscal year ’07 with the possibility of hitting 150% growth for the fiscal year. We’ve got great clients and new business relationships have resulted in expanded personnel with the addition of 2 new positions being created. All is right with the world even in this economic environment. We are moving forward with a re-development of the corporate website (seoking.com) and are approximately half way through the redesign process. We’re adding 30 plus pages of new content, a client education section, a planned directory resource section, we’ve got ten new tools with plans for 10 additional tools and so much more planned for our site expansion. All of the changes going on are very exciting for all of us here in the SEO King, Inc. family. Beyond the re-design of our company website, we will actually be deploying current site based SEO techniques. Many visitors don’t realize the present site was put into place over a period of 30 to 45 days in ’05 with no real SEO strategy. The content itself was written on the fly [...]
