Has it been a while since you’ve updated your website? Maybe it’s been way to long and it’s just time to get back into the groove of things. Why not use the coming of the new year as a more than worthy excuse to get things in gear and start making your website everything it can and should be? Here’s a quick review of things to take a look at as you formulate your site game plan for 2011: Out Of Date Web Content The coming of a new year is a great time to review your site content thoroughly and clean up any dated content that is no longer relevant or accurate. Easy targets naturally include information that is no longer valid at all due to it being past it’s “expiration date.” If it’s beyond repair, just delete the content; or sometimes, if it makes sense, you can archive it on the site—but do be sure to clean things up so they appear fresh & energetic to your visitors and the search engines as well. Make A List Of Content To Update Most sites have lots of great evergreen content—the kind that keeps visitors and search engines coming to [...]

Don’t be a victim. No matter how tempting it may sound when the false promises are laid out on the table by an SEO scammer, the truth remains the same—SEO con artists are par for the course out there…and they’re downright excellent at getting website owners to fall for their baseless, yet hope inspiring deceptions. The first thing you can do to protect yourself from SEO scammers—and to separate the good guys from the bad—is to understand the tactics that the scammers like to use. Here are 5 things you’ll learn from an SEO scammer (all false, of course): One – We’ll Get You The Number One Positioned Listing On Google. Sounds great. If only it was actually this easy! Without going into every last detail of why legit SEO providers simply never promise specific number one Google rankings, it’s important to know that number one is in most cases unrealistic (and impossible to guarantee). Two – Your Existing Site Is Terrible When It Comes To SEO. All the scammers like to promote this notion—and of course, they’ll be happy to help you “fix” the problem too. Thing is, I’ve seen this used by SEO scammers when sites actually are [...]

A few weeks ago, the web design and SEO community was totally abuzz about Google’s latest search engine update. Specifically, the search engine now instantly updates the search engine results page (SERP) instantly as a user types in their search query. Each letter typed refines and refreshes the search results displayed. Sidenote: If you’re saying to yourself, “yeah…but they’ve been doing that for years,” please note that the Google Instant Search is different than how it worked before. Until recently, with each letter of a search query typed into the search box, the search engine made suggestions based on what was typed—but it still required the human user to press “Search,” select the result presented, or click Enter in order to display the actual search results on the page. This is what’s changed—again, the results dynamically display and refresh in real time now with each letter typed. If you haven’t tried this out yet, give it a spin…it’s actually really cool. So anyway, as you can imagine (and as with any change to how the search engine works), most of the SEO community started a mass state of panic. All of the sudden, the way they all optimized and created [...]

SEO is more than just tweaking or tricking out a website in few simple steps in order to draw in plenty of organic search traffic. Many wish it was just that easy, of course, but in truth, there’s a lot of hard work and thought that goes into a winning SEO plan. Here’s what well SEO’d websites are doing right in order to find this success: Defining & Building To Fit A Niche It’s not uncommon for a website developer to want to dig in and just get a site up as quickly as possible — all while giving little or no thought at all to SEO. This is probably the essential mistake many newbies make, and also the primary reason that SEO pros are called in to help produce traffic later on. The thing is, by researching and defining a specific niche and site plan before building out the site, the other components of good SEO can just kind of fall in place from this foundation. And every organization has a unique niche — it’s just a matter of identifying and capitalizing on it with the website. Following A Keyword Plan Keywords are essential to ranking well in the [...]

Despite all of the SEO services that exist these days—many of them mediocre at best, business websites are still making some major blunders. While this is by no means an exhaustive list of some of the missed opportunities out there, these are some of the big ones that are constantly being seen over and over again. One – Building a Website With No Purpose Yay, you’re on the web. Why? If the answer is something along the lines of “all the other kids are doing it,” you’re not there for the right reason. You want your business website to do something for your business, not just sit there and be pretty. Be intentional with your web presence. Two – Not Regularly Updating The Site I know, I know. You made the website already, what more could the world possibly want? Yes, you moved buildings so the address is wrong and the phone number doesn’t work. Okay, and that link over there misdirects…and that link is flat out broken. But the website is up, and that’s all that really matters. Sound troubling? It is, but by keeping things tidy and up to date on an ongoing basis, there’s just much less [...]

In your quest for natural traffic, you should be thinking about using the Google and Yahoo sitemaps program to make your site more accessible. Now, I know there is some concern over the newest updates from Google, which we’ve already covered in this blog. However, in the long run, the sitemaps protocol really is for the best, and to ignore it is to leave valuable traffic behind. Essentially, the sitemaps program is designed to make it easier for the bots to index the content on your site. If you are already working on getting good organic traffic, as you should be, then this is another tool for your arsenal. The sitemaps are fairly straightforward to put together (and an essential part of our SEO strategy), plus they offer a number of tangible benefits to you. Again—Easy Set Up If you’ve avoided dealing with the sitemaps issue to date because you are worried about the technical side of things, stop. This is one area where the industry leaders have all gotten together to make things easy. Though sitemaps may be written in HTML or XML, the industry has officially settled on an XML file format to make things consistent across search [...]

You’ve heard the term SEO—search engine optimization—but what in the world does it really mean, anyway? And how is it different than internet marketing? Well, it’s actually simple…SEO is the use of techniques that help to optimize the results of searches done online. SEO is just one way of doing internet marketing. The term internet marketing encompasses SEO and many more marketing techniques. While SEO is extremely important, it isn’t the entire story when it comes to getting your website noticed. If you have an online business, it’s important to create a marketing plan. Many people think they need a large budget to make a marketing plan, but that isn’t always true. Many internet marketing strategies are affordable and easy to do. Website marketing is the best way to bring traffic to your site and to generate sales. At its most basic definition, SEO consists of using keywords and tags to help search engines rank your site high in results. Internet marketing uses SEO strategies to bring traffic to your website. Know Your Customer When you want to start an Internet marketing campaign, you need to first have a good understanding of who your customer is. This will help determine [...]

When it comes to targeting traffic, which strategy is better—keeping it local or going global? For every business or organization on the web, the ideal targeting is going to be different from even the closest competitors. The most effective way to obtain results is to combine local and global for a balanced, even-keel approach. Now, Let’s Examine A Few Key Points For Each Tactic… Keeping It Local: It’s essential to have a strong local presence on the web. A growing percentage of web searchers are using web resources to locate and research their own local businesses on the web. The phone book is quickly becoming a thing of the past as searchers rely upon the convenience of the web (whether at home, the office, or while mobile) to look up phone numbers and addresses. Many businesses find that serving their local market provides a large enough niche to stay busy and profitable. In this case, really optimizing a site to be highly visible and competitive for its specific local market is the way to go. The features of local search put a website on the map…literally. Taking full advantage of the opportunities provided by the major search engines’ local features [...]

There is a reason that three years ago I trademarked “Building Your Internet Brand®” as part of the SEO King, Inc. business strategy. The reason is made evident by the natural evolution of Google’s algorithm, where trust rank is the key to a successful organic ranking campaign. What is brand development? At its most fundamental level, branding is the process a business must go through to build trust with a target audience (the consumer) and the related target industries (manufacturers, wholesale distribution channels, product/service review channels, etc.). That being said, to understand what Google branding is all about, you really have to understand what SEO is and what it is not. I had planned for a blog article on this that goes into detail about what SEO means in today’s search algorithms. I guess I am going to have to push that up, as it is critical in understanding and protecting your website from major algorithm shifts in the future. You can bet that Google will continue to tweak and expand how trust is factored—and you better know what you’re doing to protect your online income for the long term. As an overview to that topic and the relevant blog [...]
